Full Description
A Mesolithic-Bronze Age worked flint assemblage was excavated on land at the rear of 121-125 Sturry Road, during an evaluation in 2012. The flint was largely residual in nature and comprised 1 blade, 2 bladelets, 1 blade-like flake, 1 retouched awl, and 2 pieces of burnt unworked flints. The assemblage may be late Neolithic/Bronze Age in date, however, the blades and bladelets appear more Neolithic in form. Two pieces of worked flint were recovered from the fill of a prehistoric/Roman ditch at the site - these may be residual in nature.
Other prehistoric features and artefacts have been identified through investigations into the wider context of the site; these include worked flint assemblages, and Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements, alongside ditches (TR 15 NE 2032) at the 121-125 Sturry Road site which may date from the late Prehistoric/Roman period. An excavation in 2015 revealed further evidence for Mesolithic-Iron Age worked and burnt flints at the site. Only residual or probably residual flints have been recorded in this record, as in situ artefacts are recorded in separate records with the features with which they are associated. A moderate amount of worked flint was recovered from the site during this investigation. At least two scrapers were recovered (one of which was a side scraper), two flint flakes, one piercer, a large quantity of burnt flint, and one utilised bladelet knife, were excavated at the site.
