Full Description

Post-medieval wall foundations were identified at 30 Hospital Lane, Canterbury during a watching brief in 2022. The first phase of construction comprised the creation of 280mm wide foundations for dwarf walls which would have been associated with a timber framed structure. These foundations were formed of reused red bricks and worked ashlar blocks of Caen stone bonded with mortar typical of the early-mid post-medieval period. The wall was constructed in a shallow wall construction trench measuring 850+mm in depth.
The phase 1 wall was then replaced, probably during the mid 19th century, with a wider and more substantial wall foundation of broken red brick fragments in a bonding mortar. This wall was aligned NW-SE and was over 480mm in width. It is thought that as the external face of the new wall appears to have respected the internal face of the dwarf wall, the walls may have stood simultaneously for some time before the earlier, and then the later wall were both demolished.
The function of the wall is unknown, however, the walls may represent alterations to the main house at 68 Castle Street, a high-status 18th century town house in the vicinity of the site. (1)
