Full Description
Archaeological features relating to a medieval building were excavated at 23 Palace Street, Canterbury in 2018. the features included a construction trench, a wall, and floor surfaces.
The construction trench was aligned NE-SW and measured at least 0.43m in width and contained a wall the visible remains of which measured 0.95m in length and 0.39m in width, however, the wall appeared to continue beyond the limits of the trench. The wall was constructed of large roughly faced sub-angular flints alongside large lumps of chalk and moderately fine sandy lime mortar.
The floors were represented by two layers of clay - the first scorched, and the second compacted clay. No dating material was recovered from the floors, however, they are presumed to be late medieval in date.
12 sherds of post-Roman pottery were recovered from the site. Four of these dated to between the 12th-13th century and, alongside a medieval peg-tile fragment, were residual material from within a post-medieval layer. Five sherds of Roman pottery and two Roman tiles were also present as residual material from a post-medieval layer at the site.
Seventeen fragments of animal bone were also recovered from the site, however, as these were recovered from post-medieval contexts and did not show any obvious evidence for processing, they are not particularly significant finds within the wider site context.
The medieval building was demolished during the post-medieval period.
It is thought that the building may have been the slaughterhouse listed in the Parliamentary survey of 1647, which was thought to have originated from an earlier period. However, the absence of definiteive dating evidence regarding these features leaves their provenance unclear. (1)
