Full Description
Later prehistoric worked flint and pottery sherds were excavated during a strip, map, and sample excavation in 2019 at 5-5a Rhodaus Town, Canterbury. The worked flint dated between the Late Mesolithic and Early Bronze Age, whilst the pottery dated between the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age periods.
316 pieces of worked flint were recovered from the site. These dated between the Late Mesolithic and Early - Middle Bronze Age periods. Types of tools recovered included 4 bladelets, 3 core rejuvenation flakes, 2 cores, 8 core fragments and a core tablet, a crested blade, 14 scrapers, and an arrowhead roughout.
2 cores, 3 core rejuvenation flakes, 8 core fragments, 1 core tablet.
53 sherds of pottery dating between the Middle Bronze Age to the Middle Iron Age. These included a large quantity of bodysherds, 2 rim sherds, 1 possible base sherd, and 2 decorated sherds. The two decorated sherds were bodysherds which had been roughly wiped/combed on the exterior.
258 firecracked flints were also recovered from the site.
Worked flint assemblages have been found during excavations at nearby sites, whilst cremation burials, pit and post-holes, and boundary ditches all dating from the later prehistoric period have been found at an adjacent site. (1)
Excavation at an adjacent site revealed a Neolithic to late Bronze Age flint assemblage, alongside a pottery assemblage dating from the mid Bronze Age to the late Iron Age period. 117 pieces of struck flint, 286 pieces of burnt flint, and around 28 sherds of mid Bronze Age to early Roman pottery were excavated as residual material from a number of later features.
The flint assemblage comprised 6 blades, between 90-100 flakes (including waste flakes, and notched flakes), 5 cores, 4 scrapers, and 1 Thames pick.
The pottery assemblage included flint tempered body sherds and jar sherds, which dated to the Bronze Age and Iron Age periods. (2)
