Medieval/post-medieval road/courtyard surfaces were excavated in 2011 at Green Court, Canterbury Cathedral. The external surfaces were comprised of copmact layers containing a range of inclusions, including flint, chalk, charcoal, oyster shell, crushed tile and brick, and grit. Around 8 layers were identified. No dateable material was recovered from these layers, however a plan of the Precincts dating to 1680 AD suggests that the area in which the trench containing the deposits was excavated may have been enclosed during this period, therefore the deposits may form surfaces of an enclosed courtyard. The nature and depths of these layers has also been suggested to represent a road surface, as it is likely that a route existed in this area over a considerable length of time in order to service the monastic buildings both pre and post Dissolution.

A masonry feature was also identified; this comprised a piece of worked ragstone and a large flint nodule associated with crumbly mid-orange brown mortar. The position of these artefacts suggested that they had been displaced from their original position. The masonry feature has been interpreted as part of a nearby property which was deposited in this area during a rebuilding/repair phase. (1)
