Full Description

Medieval-post-medieval floors and a 19th century wall were excavated at The King's School Canterbury during an evaluation in 2012.

A sequence of layers at the site was interpreted as floor bedding and levelling deposits, alongside a flint metalled surface thought to be indicative of a period during which a different type of flooring was used. The sequence could not be dated, however, a piece of Tudor brick (1450-1700) was recovered from one of the deposits. Interpretations of the layers include its possible association with the kitchen during its use as part of the abbey complex; it may also have been part of the New Lodging following the Dissolution, or part of a public house dating to the 18th century.
Inclusions within the layers included mortar and rare flecks of charcoal.

Another feature at the site was a probable 19th century brick wall aligned N-S. This was thought to potentially have been associated with an irregular feature with steeplyg angled sides over 0.25m deep, containing a single piece of clay pipe.

Removal of plaster from extant walls at the site revealed that the internal walls were also constructed of brick and may "represent partition walls constructed during Butterfield's renovation work in the nineteenth century" (from the original report, 1).
