Full Description

A medieval-post-medieval agricultural soil horizon was excavated at land on the corner of Broad Oak Road and Farleigh Road, Canterbury during an evaluation in 2014. The deposits at the site were characterised by clayey sandy silt with charcoal flecking. The deposits suggest a cultivated/developed soil horizon.
Finds from deposits of this character in the vicinity of the site have produced a fragment of 11th-12th century pottery, and the area is thought to have formed an open field until recently, suggesting that this area had a primarily agricultural function from the medieval period into the post-medieval period.(1)
