Full Description

Some of the wreck towed into Kingsgate Bay.(1) "On Saturday afternoon, the captain of a cutter landed at Ramsgate and reported that whilst sailing at the back of the Goodwins he sighted a wreck and at some considerable risk ventured close. He managed to fasten a rope to part of it, tearing away the gaff, mainsail, boom, and upper part of the stern, which on examination was found to be marked, `British Queen - of Margate.' There is no doubt that it was the Ostend packet, which sailed from Ostend on Tuesday 13th December. From the state of the wreck it is feared all the passengers and crew are drowned. The captain's son was with him, also the owners two sons. The vessel was not insured; bits of wreck have been taken to Margate. Lord Percy should have been aboard, but the packet sailed one hour before he arrived.(2) Master: Leishman Crew Lost: All Passengers Lost: All Date of Loss: R Additional sources cited in the United Kingdom Shipwreck Index: MGS p172.
