Full Description

[Area TQ 6043 5640] Stanley's or Stangate Quarry (1) Human jaw and thigh bones found and two late Celtic (c.300BC) Urns. Human skull, 'of a very low type', found. Roman stud nails belonging to sandals found. (1) Benj. Harrison's note of 10.1.1907. 'Skeleton found in Stanley's Quarry, Basted Lane, in the presence of the foreman. I went to the quarry but the workmen had left. I ascertained that no pottery had been found'. [No other refs. to finds at this quarry in book] (2) Ightham - Stanley's Quarry - Remains of a skeleton have been discovered under a heap of blocks of Kentish rag-stone. Mr. B. Harrison visited the site and procured portions of two Celtic vessels which had contained calcined human bones. They lay 3 feet from the skeleton. (3) 'Numerous archaeological finds have been made here but there is hardly room for them' [to be named on OS plans] Skeleton found 1907. (4) Quarrying ceased at Stanleys c.1952 and it is at present being back-filled. No further information was gained on the early finds and nothing was found in the latter years of the quarry's life. Mr. J. Bance, foreman, indicated the general area of the quarry being worked in the early years of the century (centred TQ 600425635) as the probable site of discovery of the skeletal remains. No finds from the quarry are held at Maidstone Museum and no further information was gained there.(5)
