Full Description

'Deal 2nd: Yesterday in a hard gale of wind the THREE PHILLISES, Caenazo, from Genoa for Ostend, was drove on shore near Sandown Castle and dismasted; also drove on shore near the said place, a snow from Ostend to Bordeaux; a ship with wine, from ditto to ditto, drove on shore on the North Sand Head, and was entirely lost. The masters and crews are all saved; the former is got off much damaged.' (1)

Wind conditions S at Deal on the 1st.

'Den 31sten is by Sandown Castle masteloos op strand gedreven 't schip de 3 PHILLIS, Kapt. Caenozo, van Genua na Ostende, en een snaauw van Ostende na Bourdeaux.' (1)

[Translation by compiler: 'On the 31st the ship the 3 PHILLIS, Capt. Caenozo, from Genoa for Ostend, was driven ashore dismasted near Sandown Castle, and a snow from Ostend for Bordeaux.'] (1)

NB: Sources (1) state that the THREE PHILLISES was dismasted, which does not necessarily mean the ship was lost. It is unclear from the text whether 'the former' refers to the first of the two unnamed vessels, i.e. the snow, or to the first vessel in the list, i.e. the THREE PHILLISES, but it would seem to indicate that either the THREE PHILLISES or the snow were recovered; source (2) is the source of the description of the vessel as a snow, but this seems properly to pertain to the vessel from Ostend to Bordeaux (1539268) as described in the original sources (1) and (2) also conflates the snow from Ostend to Bordeaux near Sandown with the ship making a voyage in the opposite direction on the North Sand Head (1179716).

Master: Caenazo (1); Caenozo
