Full Description
A Roman quarry pit filled with a series of dump and weathering deposits were discovered during an archaeological evaluation carried out on land off Tothill Street in Minster, Thanet. The quarry pit was an irregular, sub-rectangular area, 15m long and >1.8m wide and >0.89m deep. It cut the natural chalk geology and was sealed by the ploughsoil at 0.45m depth. The dump and weathering deposits contained a large assemblage of 1st – 2nd century AD pottery, iron objects (including nails), cbm (including tegula fragments), residual worked flint, fired clay, burnt stone and a large, sub-square worked sandstone block, probably from a masonry structure. The quantity and range of material as well as the palaeoenvironmental evidence would indicate crop processing (hulled wheat, emmer, barley) and settlement waste from an established downland landscape of both arable and pastoral farming.
