Buried soil deposits which were sealed by colluvial deposits were recorded in two trenches during an archaeological evaluation on land off Tothill Street in Minster, Thanet. They were discovered at a depth of of 1.28m and 0.8m. The buried soils (palaeosols) were characterised by c. 0.25m thick, sterile and homogenous, mid greyish-brown clayey silts. The palaeosols are reworked aeolian material deposited within a ‘basin’ within the landscape during periglacial conditions, probably in the early Holocene, when initial soil formation (pedogenesis) occurred.
