Full Description
Buried soil deposits which were sealed by colluvial deposits were recorded in two trenches during an archaeological evaluation on land off Tothill Street in Minster, Thanet. They were discovered at a depth of of 1.28m and 0.8m. The buried soils (palaeosols) were characterised by c. 0.25m thick, sterile and homogenous, mid greyish-brown clayey silts. The palaeosols are reworked aeolian material deposited within a ‘basin’ within the landscape during periglacial conditions, probably in the early Holocene, when initial soil formation (pedogenesis) occurred. Both deposits were sampled by monolith and bulk samples for a geoarchaeological assessment. (information summarised from source) (1)
