Full Description

A Belgic cremation burial of c. 50 B.C. comprising an ill- formed bead-rim pot containing 4 bronze bangles and 2 La Tene III bronze brooches, was found by a mechanical excavator at Godden's Quarry, Borough Green, on 8th July, 1953. The find spot was indicated by Mr. J. Bance, Foreman of Quarry who was present at the time of the discovery at TQ 6035 5620. Previously, in 1952, the topsoil and loam had been removed to a depth of 4' and accounts of the workmen indicate that the burial was found 6" below this new surface, but nothing is known of the cist or pit in which it must have been contained. A careful search of the area revealed no evidence of shallower burials which might have been completely removed. The finds are in Maidstone Museum. Acc. No.49:1953, under this same Acc. No. are a butt-beaker and some sherds which are not listed in the Accessions Register; these appear to be the items referred to in a note on Maidstone Museum 6" - "more pottery found 1954". Mr. J. Bance was unaware of the 1954 discovery and no further information on this was gained either there or at Maidstone Museum. No further finds have been made to date. Associated objects comprised a burnished bead-rim bowl; two 'Aylesford' brooches; decorated flat bronze bangle; three plain bronze bangles. Ref: Stead, I.M., 1976.
