Full Description

A quarry pit of probable medieval date was discovered during an investigation on land off Canterbury Road, St Nicholas At Wade. The pit was recorded across the majority of the southern half of the area, it measured at least 17.8m long and at least 11m wide and at least 0.61m deep, with shallow to moderately sloped sides and a flat base. A small collection of animal bone, CBM, marine shell, medieval pottery and a single flint were recovered from a machine excavated slot in the pit, while additional animal bone, medieval pottery and lava quern fragments were recovered during the evaluation. This feature had previously been interpreted as an 'unconvincing sunken feature building' when it was excavated during the evaluation trenching. During this investigation it eas was partially exposed in the southeast end of the trench 9.(2)
