Full Description
Two palaeochannels were excavated at Canterbury Riverside Project in August 2016 during a geoarchaeological and palaeoenvironmental investigation. One of the channels has been interpreted as being formed by a spring, the other as a run-off channel from a larger river. The channels were identified through the presence of fluvial sands and silty clay thought to have an alluvial origin. Possible banks were identified associated with the river. Several flooding phases were also identified, suggested to be associated with the presence of a river in the vicinity of the site.
Other features at the site included possible metalling or an activity horizon and potential evidence for a quarry; however, these may also be natural features. (1)
