Full Description
Early twentieth century redbrick walled garden, Staplestreet Road, Hernhill. The wall is believed to have been constructed c. 1910 (1)
Historic building recording was carried out at the site in 2022, in advance of proposed development.
The garden was originally constructed to supply fruits and vegetables to the nearby house at Mount Ephriam. The original layout, including the location of most of the glasshouses, was not identified during the survey, however the remains of a single possible glass house was identified in association with the ancillary building. This glass house was constructed as a lean-to and abutted both the garden wall and the south east end of the ancillary building. Furthermore, evidence for structured planting against the south-east facing walls was identified.
The walls of the garden date from the Edwardian era and were constructed from brick and local rag stone. The walls measured around 3m in height, "the enclosed area was approximately 3844m²
(1 acre), measuring 77m long and 49m wide, with a perimeter wall length of 262.60m" (from the original report, 1). Access to the gardens was via plain wooden doors.
The ancillary building measured 18m in length and 3m in width; it comprised four rooms and contained a heating system. This structure has been interpreted as a storage facility and was potentially also used as a potting or propagation facility. The building contained four original casement windows and glass panes, with some replacement latches. Some the of the skylights are probably also original, as are the slate roof and the roof supports. (2)
