Full Description

"...a large three decker, very deeply laden, from London, bound to Jamaica, drove...on the Goodwin Sands, and was totally lost; as no boats could give them assistance, it is imagined that the captain and all the crew perished, part of which were several ladies, passengers." Master: Capt. Suttie (1) Extract from a letter from Deal: "This morning at half past 3 o"clock at dawn of day it was blowing hard at N.W. We saw a large ship on shore on the North part of the Goodwin Sands. All the day it still blew hard. At 2 o"clock we saw by the glasses the ship over her beams ends and no possibility of any boats assisting her. At 3pm, Mr Appleby a pilot of one of the ships in company came on shore here and informed us that the unfortunate ship was totally lost and that it was the Cranbrooke, Capt Stuie bound to Jamaica. It is feared most or all of the crew perished. The wreck may appear at low water. There were a great number of passengers on board, who have shared the same fate as the crew." Master: Stuie (2) Date of Loss: A
