Summary

1764 wreck of English East Indiaman, which was beached to save life on Sandwich Flats after grounding and becoming bilged on the nearby Brake Sands, while outward-bound from London to India with a general cargo. A contemporary advertisement for the sale of recovered cargo included wine, brandy, claret, canvas, horse harness, clothing, cutlery, lead, ammunition and muskets. Constructed of wood in 1754, she was an armed sailing vessel. See record 1601637 for a site suggested as the possible remains of the EARL OF HOLDERNESS. Status: Casualty

Full Description

'Deal, 11 Jan. The EARL OF HOLDERNESS, Brook, for India, after being ashore last night on the Brake, and bulged, was this morning obliged, in order to save their lives, to run her ashore on the main[land], about three miles from from hence; all the officers and people are saved, but it is feared the ship will be lost.' (1)

'All the aforesaid Goods to be seen from To-morrow Morning to the Time of Sale, at But olph [sic] Wharf, except the Lead, which is to be seen at Mess. Freeman and Co.'s Horsley Down ; where catalogues may be had, at the Place of Sale, and of BENJAMIN VAUGHAN and Son, Brokers.' (6)
