Full Description

`The ST JANEIRO man of war of 64 guns, richly loaded from the Havana, coming into the Downs the 2nd inst. in a hard gale of wind, parted from her anchors and ran ashore near Ramsgate, but the officers and crew were all saved, excepting one man who was lost in attempting to swim ashore, and one of the quartermasters who was killed by the mast's cutting away.' (1)

Winds at Deal given as from SW on 02-MAR-1763 in the same issue of LL. (column 2, page 2). (1)

`...another Spanish-built vessel came to grief in the Little Downs. This was the 60-gun 4th rate SAN GENARO, a man o'war captured by the British at Havana in 1762. The cause of her loss is obscure as she appears to have sunk while at anchor.' (3)

A man o'war, captured by the British at Havana 13-AUG-1762 and taken into service by the Royal Navy. NB: no details of this warship appear in the standard references SRN or BWLS. (4)

NB: That the vessel was `richly loaded' implies her use as a cargo vessel; the phrase `rigged her to come home' (5) implies an altered rigging and, possibly, therefore, use. Together these sources may explain her absence from standard references.

`Portsmouth, March 13. The JANEIRO, that is lost in the Downs, was a prodigious fine new 64-gun ship: our people launched her at the Havanna, and rigged her to come home.' (5)

Source (1) gives the name of the vessel as ST JANEIRO, whilst sources (3) and (4) give the name as SAN GENARO; and source (5) as JANEIRO.
