Full Description
`The SUCCESS, Mashiter, from London to Lancaster, was beat to pieces in the late storm, near Sandown Castle; the people were saved.' (1)
`In the night between the 24th and 25th instant, there was a most violent storm at NE...' (4)
There are two entries for this vessel in the United Kingdom Shipwreck Index, one under Kent Downs (BE), expressing the date of loss as the date of the storm, the other interpreting Sandown Castle as Sandown, Isle of Wight (BB), and expressing the date of loss as the reporting date of 06-MAR-1743.
At the time of loss the Julian Calendar was still in use in England, with the New Year beginning on 25th March. Therefore dates between 1st January and 24th March inclusive are one year later in modern reckoning (New Style) and the date of loss in the record has been amended to 1744 to reflect this; sources (2) and (3), however, follow sources (1) and (4) in expressing the date as 1743 (Old Style).
