Full Description
[Marginal] "In the month of January last" [1841] in lowering a hill "on the Pilgrim's Road, between Wrotham and Trottescliffe", the labourers found a considerable quantity of human bones buried in the chalk within two feet of the surface. Context indicates that the finds were made in work on "the public highway" and suggests "that the bodies were deposited before the formation of the road in the anti-Christian times". "It was remarked that, a few years since, a great may human skeletons were found in the same road about half a mile from these". (1,2) No further information could be obtained regarding these burials. (3)
