Full Description

"Totally lost on the Goodwin Sand with the owner, Crew (15 in number) and a Deal boatman." "Five boxes of linen, part of the cargo of the Hoffnung..... have been picked up by the the LIVELY and landed here." Master: Raders (1) "A large brig ran ashore on the Goodwin Sand; several of our boats were immediately manned and proceeded to her assistance, but from the situation of the vessel, and such tremendous Seas ... some of them were obliged to return; they report that only one boat was able to each the vessel, where they remained the whole day, endeavouring to save the Ship and Crew. 4pm. The Vessel has just disappeared" " She was a Brig of about 220 tons, white sides, fresh painted and small quarter badges, and two sliding guntermasts, and no figurehead. Her name could not be made out but `Altona" was observed on the stern." (2) United Kingdom Shipwreck Index gives the name as HOFFANDING and the nationality as Danish.
