Full Description
Three or four Roman burials were excavated on land at Nackington, near Canterbury during an archaeological evaluation in 2014. Three definite burials and one probable burial were excavated at the site.
One of the burials dates from the 3rd-4th century AD, with the proximity of the othert burials suggesting that they are likely to be contemporaneous. The human remains were recorded but not excavated so are still in situ. Artefacts from the burials have been lifted, including three complete ceramic vessels from one of the graves. The ceramic vessels comprised "A complete small necked ceramic jar, Nene Valley colour-coated ware, had been placed at the head of the deceased... A small Dragendorff 38 Oxfordshire red-slipped ware cup-like vessel had been placed upside down near the feet. A small, necked black-surfaced coarse sandy ware vessel was found in the grave fill in the vicinity of the lower part of the leg. These have been dated to the late 3rd or 4th centuries AD" (from the original report, 1).
Human remains were recovered from the three definite burials. These were aligned ESE-WNW, N-S and S-N. The probable burial (which was not excavated) demonstrated evidence for large flat headed nails, however, as these were found in several other non-burial related features, this can not be taken as evidence for interment.
Late Iron Age - early Roman features (such as ditches and a gully) (TR 15 SE 410) were also identified at the site, therefore the inhumation burials represent a continuation of use of the site into the later Roman period. (1)
