Full Description

Medieval and post-medieval features related to woodland management were identified through site visits and LiDAR imaging at Parkwood Road, Canterbury. The features are located in an area of ancient woodland, and include woodbanks, unidentified linear features, and a track or hollow way.
Several areas of woodbank are present across the site, including a feature identified through work at the site (TR 15 NW 2564). The longest woodbank at the site measures around 260m in length. Woodbanks may have been used to define the extent of an area of woodland or property boundary, to create a barrier between areas of pasture and woodland, to provide protection to an area undergoing coppicing. The woodbanks are thought to be late medieval or post-medieval in date.
The hollow way at the site was orientated N-S and measured around 225m in length; this feature may be medieval in date and is visible on an 1801 map of the site. (1)
