Summary

A post-medieval spring or well existed behind No.s 27 and 28 St Peter's Street, Canterbury during the 17th century. The spring waters were identified as chalybeate, and were promoted for their medicinal properties to gentry and nobility during the period. The spring or well was associated with paving, steps, and rails, in order for access to the waters. Later, an exotic nursery was created at the site in 1815 incorporating the wells.
