Full Description
Evidence for post-medieval and modern quarrying has been identified through a 2020 desk-based assessment of The Old Woodyard, Canterbury. The use of OS maps suggests that the area was agricultural land up to the late 19th century, with the first evidence of quarrying coming from the 1898 OS map. The use of documentary sources and historic maps suggests that the quarry went out of use in the late 1920s or early 1930s. (1)
The desk based assessment states that "it was this quarry at the PDA and the wider area to the north east that found hundreds of Palaeolithic implements in the 1920s" (from the original report, 1).
The 4th edition OS map shows the locations of two "Old Gravel Pit" sites on either side of the site at The Old Woodyard.
