`Dover 30th Sept. At noon, strong gales and heavy squalls...
`Oct 1st. Fresh gales. A brig is at anchor under Shakespear's Cliff, but in no danger, in consequence of the wind having come around to the WNW. The PROVIDENCE, Marshall, from Blythe, on shore at Dumchurch [sic], delivering coals, has been washed up and will go to pieces. Harbour tolerably good.' (1)
