Monument record TQ 87 NW 1146 - A line of Second World War anti-tank cubes, Allhallows-on Sea
Summary
A line of Second World War anti-tank cubes extending for 1250m along the coast around the north of Allhallows-on-Sea. At its eastern end the line of cubes is supplemented by a length of ditch so is only one row of cubes deep. The next 205m was protected by two rows of cubes, reduced again to a single line supplemented by rows of smaller concrete 'dragons teeth' on the seaward side of the cubes for the remainder if its course. The cubes terminated at their eastern end close to a pillbox (NMR Monument Number: 1536374) The dragons teeth continue south-east along the coast , terminating close to another pillbox (NMR Monument number: 1536379 ) where the coastal defences continue eastward as a minefield which extends around the Allhallows Marshes onto Grain (NMR Monument number :1536338). Another minefield (NMR Monument number:1536303) was seen to extend westwards along the coast to St Mary's Marshes.These features were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
