Monument record TQ 65 NW 44 - Early 2nd century Romano-British burials at Addington

Summary

In October 1965 a mechanical excavator at Addington Sand Pits removing the top soil uncovered a Romano-British burial group. The top of the burial was destroyed in the process and an urn was broken. The burial was 18ins [.45m] below the surface and in a sand filled pit in loamy soil. It included a cinerary urn containing bones, a dish for a cover, a small jar and a flagon. A subsequent excavation carried out by the Lower Medway Archaeological Research Group revealed a second burial close by. Finds included Samian pottery dated to early Second Century.
