Full Description

Palaeochannels and Mesolithic flint material, possibly in situ, was excavated at Ash-cum-Ridley in 2010. A number of Mesolithic flints were located within the palaeochannel and is thought to be in situ as it demonstrates few indications of abrasion. Some of the flint was burnt, some of it was worked. The assemblages included blades, bladelets, and cores. 540 pieces of worked flint were recovered in total from the palaeochannel, the area around it, and from the fill of later features. Not all of this assemblage is thought to date from the Mesolithic period. The palaeochannel produced over 1kg (1014g in total) of burnt flint.
The Mesolitihc paleochannel aligned north-east to south-west alongisde the significant quantity of struck flint recovered suggests activity dating from the Mesolithic in the area. (1)
