Full Description
"Is totally lost; the First Officer and twelve seamen drowned; the Captain, Second Officer, three seamen and a boy, saved by the Deal Boatmen who took them off some pieces of the floating wreck..."(1) "Shortly before dawn with a heavy gale from the SW and rain, the crew of the Deal lugger SPARROW assembled on the beach alongside the Rodney state (so named after the inn on the W. side of Beach Street). At dawn, a Thomas Middleton saw a new wreck on the sands and the SPARROW was quickly launched with Edward Erridge as coxswain. Shortly after, the Downs guardship fired a gun signalling they too had spotted the wreck and four more Deal boats put to sea. It took the SPARROW two hours to reach the wreck which was already breaking up, swooping past from windward under reduced sail taking off the captain and five remaining survivors. Two bodies were recovered from the 14 lives lost in the wreck and were inturned in the area of the burial ground in Western Road known as `the Strangers Nook". The coxswain of the SPARROW received a medal for bravery and Lord Liverpool, Warden of the Cinque Ports, ordered a special engraving of the rescue."(2) United Kingdom Shipwreck Index states that 14 out of 20 crew were lost.
