Full Description
A Roman trackway and associated wheel ruts were excavated at St Mary Bredin School, Canterbury during an evaluation in 2016.
The trackway comprised a hollow-way aligned NE-SW. The trackway extended beyond the limits of the excavation, but had a visible width of 1.37m and a maximum depth of 0.5m.
Gullies at the site measured up to 0.45m in width and 0.09m in depth. The gullies were also aligned NE-SW, and were cut into the base of the trackway. The gullies were lined with compact gravel metalling which was overlain by a silty clay deposit. The gullies have been interpreted as possible wheel ruts.
Finds associated with the trackway include "a copper alloy nummus coin of the House of
Constantine dated to AD 315-320, a fragment of a potential iron stone or metalworking residue
(SF4), and two iron nails…, and two iron hobnails" (from the original report, 2).
Roman pottery and tile, including a box flue fragment, were recovered as residual material from later features at the site.
Environmental sampling at the site uncovered evidence for 1 fragment of slag, and small quantities of animal remains (bones and teeth), and hammerscale. (2)
