Full Description

A Roman rubbish pit, domestic oven, drain, and road, were excavated in 1986 at Stour Street. Environmental material from the features was analysed. Material contained within the rubbish pit included fragments of oyster shell, wood, brick/tile, plant material, metal and slag fragments, and small fish bones. Analysis of beetle and bug taxa from the sample suggested that over 35 different species were present within the sample, many of which would have "exploited accumulations of decaying organic material" (from the original report, 1). This suggests that organic refuse was deposited in the fill of the pit.
Analysis of the drain fill revealed evidence for fish, shellfish, bird, and mammal, and plant remains, brick/tile fragments, mortar, and a single pot sherd.
Silts associated with the use of the 2nd century road included evidence for iron slag, charcoal, and carbon material indicative of industrial activity, plant material, metal and slag fragments, brick/tile fragments, and a single bird bone. (1)
