Summary

The earthworks of a post medieval sea wall can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. This sea wall could be traced northwards from the south coast of the Isle of Grain for 1.3km, ending near Wallend. The earthworks, which are depicted on the 1864 Ordnance Survey map, were levelled during the construction of the post-war BP refinery on Grain. It was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
