The earthworks of a post medieval sea wall can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. This sea wall encircled an area approximately 900m by 650m centred on TQ 8673 7556. The railway line that ran north to All Hallows adapted the western part of this sea wall as a railway embankment (NMR 1541587). Two separate sections of sea wall could be seen at TQ 8618 7535 and TQ 8621 7586. These banks, which were depicted on the 1864 Ordnance Survey map, was levelled during the construction of the post-war BP refinery on Grain They were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1-4)
