Building record TQ 76 SW 522 - Former Fleur de Lys public house in the village of Burham

Summary

The Fleur de Lys public house formerly existed in the village of Burham, which lies to the south of Rochester, Kent. It has been suggested that the building dated from the C16, although there is no evidence to indicate conclusively that it was from this period. C18 records refer to the building as the Flower de Lue, and by the mid C19, the building was known by its later name. The Fleur de Lys was a two-storey building; partially of brick construction, the majority of the building was rendered in rough cast; the roofs were covered with clay tiles. The footprint of the building was rectangular and comprised a hip-roofed block to the front; adjacent to Rochester Road, and two parallel hip-roofed bocks to the rear. To the north, a flat-roofed single storey toilet block was added. To the east, the elevation fronting Rochester Road was blind, with the exception of a central eight-over-eight sliding sash window at first floor. To the south, the front block had two bays with a door to the left hand side. The rear block had irregular fenestration with a door to the far left and a large ridge stack. To the north, the front block had two bays with a door to the right hand side, and a slender central wall stack. The rear block had a single first floor window; the ground floor is obscured by the late-C20 toilet block. Generally the windows were a mixture of late-C19 sliding sashes and casement windows, and late-C20/ early-C21 casement windows. The building was demolished in 2010
