Monument record MKE122909 - Boxley Abbey
Summary
Cistercian Abbey house established in the mid-12th century and closing in 1538 during the time of the dissolution of the monasteries. Trench 5 exposed part of a stone lined culvert running NW-SE. In Trench 6, three phases of building were identified which can be related to phases 1, 2 and 4 from Trench 1 during the 2022 evaluations. The masonry was in good condition and sat 0.4m below the surface. Trench 7 revealed two walls and several later features which had unfortunately disturbed the walls. Trench 8 contained one wall running NE-SW as well as some other smaller features.
