Full Description
Building remains associated with 17th century outhouses and later structures were excavated at 1-6 South Close, Canterbury during an evaluation in 1999. Features such as walls and floors were the main features excavated associated with 17th-19th century structures at the site. These included the Sacrist's House which was extensively altered (or demolished) during the 17th - early 18th centuries. This was evidenced though demolition material and the construction of lines of unmortared bricks alongside a brick pier thought to have supported a wooden floor in the rebuilt structure. Other walls associated with the structure include the rear wall of the kitchen, and a possible extension/the wall of a large septic tank, and a brick wall forming a garden terrace.
Part of the revetment of the Campanile wall, probably dating between the 16th-17th century, was excavated at the site (although, due to a lack of dating evidence, this may date from the 15th or 18th centuries). The revetment wall was associated with a Victorian glass house, which was itself associated with a stoke room containing a boiler.
Other features at the site include the walls of an outhouse containing a kiln, thought to have been used for the manufacture of clay pipes. Around 150 sherds comprising clay pipes and wasters were excavated from the area around the kiln.
A series of post-medieval walls, floors, metalled surfaces, and rubbish pits were excavated at the site, many of which seemed to have originated from domestic buildings. (1)
