Monument record TQ 77 SE 1388 - The cropmark of a 19th and 20th century tramway can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2011
Summary
The cropmark of a 19th and 20th century tramway can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 2011. This feature consists of the cropmarks of two parallel ditches situated between Hoo Marina Park and Hoo St. Werburgh that can be traced for approximately 148m. This tramway was laid to connect clay pits (NMR 1545272) to the brickworks that once occupied the area of Hoo Marina Park. The earliest tramway in this area is depicted on the 1896 Ordnance Survey map and connected to a clay pit south-east of Cockham Cottages. By 1909 this clay pit had been abandoned and a new one started to the north and these cropmarks are the remains of this realignment. The tramway, which had been removed by 1933, was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
