Monument record TQ 77 SE 1389 - The earthworks of a large 19th and 20th century gravel pit can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947
Summary
The earthworks of a large 19th and 20th century gravel pit can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947. The gravel pit was connected via a tramway to a wharf to the south. The gravel pit is first depicted on the Ordnance Survey in 1896 and had been enlarged by 1909 and again by 1933, although it appears to have been abandoned by this final date. With the exception of the steeper slopes on the north and western sides the interior was brought into arable cultivation by 1947. There appears to be a second entrance to the quarry at the north-west corner and a linear cropmark photographed in 2011 may be the remains of a path or hollow way. Aerial photographs taken in 2011 show a number of linear cropmarks in the interior which may represent different phases of extraction. It was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
