Monument record TQ 77 SE 248 - Hoo St. Werburgh brick works
Summary
Hoo St. Werburgh brick works was situated near the coast to the south of the village. A brick works is depicted on the 1867 map and subsequent editions show the changing layout of this site. Aerial photographs indicate that the works had closed by 1950. The 1867 map depicts a wash mill (where the clay was mixed with water) a group of buildings, presumably moulding sheds (where the bricks were formed), and possible washbacks (where the liquid clay would dry out). The area south of the sheds was marked Brick Field and a brick kiln was to the east. On the coast south of the brick field were wharves and landings. From 1898 large embanked washbacks and adjoining moulding sheds were constructed along the northern edge of the site. This layout expands and contracts in subsequent years with new washbacks built and others abandoned then brought back into use. A completely new arrangement of buildings was in place at the eastern end of the site by 1909, though abandoned by 1933. These were centred on TQ 7838 7128 and the foundations can be seen on air photos taken in 1952. The brickworks were linked to various clay pits via tramways. These lines were lifted and re-laid as clay pits were abandoned and new ones opened. The most easterly clay pit appears to have been abandoned circa 1947 and this may mark the closure of the brickworks. To the south of the washbacks were the drying grounds and numerous rows of bricks can be seen laid out there in the1940s air photos. No brick kiln is depicted by the Ordnance Survey after 1867 since when the bricks may have been fired in clamps (a kiln constructed with the 'green' bricks that were to be fired). These kilns were constructed to the south of the drying grounds. The brick works were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
