The fragmented remains of a post medieval clay pit can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947. The clay pit was centred on TQ 7878 7153. This clay pit is depicted on the 1867 Ordnance Survey map but appears to be disused by that date although it is not until the next edition in 1896 that it is marked 'Old Clay Pit'. It was crossed by a causeway to the coast by 1896 and joined to a later clay pit to the north by 1933 but does not appear to have been brought back into use. The northern edge was truncated by a tramway that served the later clay pit and a later tramway (in place by 1946) cut through the centre of the workings. Air photos taken in 2007 show that the area is now predominantly pasture. It was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
