Monument record TQ 77 SW 1143 - Remains of a possible Second World War installation can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947
Summary
The remains of a possible Second World War installation can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947. This site was situated on waste ground, the site of a former brickworks (NMR 1545585) to the east of Cooling Road. Access to the site was via a slightly raised roadway from Cooling Road that ran for circa 70m before looping back on itself ¿ similar to access roads for barrage balloon sites. Adjacent to this access road were two rectangular outlines possibly the remains of buildings circa 11.7m by 5.6m. Also at the site and possible associated were two small square buildings and a small structure surrounded by an earthen bank. None of these features are depicted by the Ordnance Survey in 1938 and the site, apparently abandoned, is first seen on aerial photographs taken in January 1945. The area is now occupied by a Hilltop Primary School and the houses of Hilltop Road. It was mapped form aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
