Monument record TQ 77 SE 1404 - A possible Second World War military training site, associated with Kingshill Camp

Summary

A possible Second World War military training site, associated with Kingshill Camp (Monument 1545609), has been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. Features including slit trenches, gun emplacements, weapons pits and earth covered air raid shelters were visible, mainly as earthworks, over an area of about 3 hectares immediately to the north west of the camp. The open area in the centre of the site appears to have served as a playing field. The training site may also have been associated with a small military installation, possibly a searchlight battery (Monument 1545625), located adjacent to the north corner of Kingshill Camp.
