Monument record TQ 87 NE 1151 - The cropmarks of two parallel ditches, possibly the remains of a building (WW1 or WW2), north of Grain village
Summary
The cropmarks of two parallel ditches, possibly the remains of a building (WW1 or WW2) which could be seen within a playing field on the northern side of Grain village. The ditches are aligned NW-SE, lie 6m apart and measure 11.8m in length. They sit within an area which was seen to be surrounded by barbed wire during the earlier part of the Second World War. The traces of the barbed wire were seen as a dark line in the vegetation on RAF photographs taken in 1942, but may have already been removed by then. Further to the east of the same playing field are the cropmark traces of a possible (WW1or WW2) military site comprising a number of buildings and circular structures, including a possible searchlight (NMR Amie Monument number:1545621). This site was mapped from aerial photographs taken by English Heritage in 2011 as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
