Monument record TQ 77 SE 1413 - A possible Second World War bomb crater is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, 1942

Summary

A possible Second World War bomb crater is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, and has been mapped as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. Aerial photographs taken in June 1942 show an area of freshly disturbed earth 47.4m by 29.7m. The feature is associated with a system of crenellated practice trenches which are closely arranged around a circular knoll, part of an extensive military training ground mainly dating to the First World War, and could represent the result of Second World War training activity. If this feature is a bomb crater, it may be evidence of an (apparently minor) air raid on Lodge Hill which took place on the night of 7-8 May 1942, and may be associated with another crater 570m to the north. The Lodge Hill Armaments Depot and Chattenden Magazines lie to the north, within 2km of this site. Chattenden Barracks is located 675m to the north east.
