Full Description

Medieval masonry features relating to the fire at and demolition of Christ Church Priory monastic buildings, and the rebuilds and later medieval constructions at Canterbury Cathedral were excavated during an evaluation in 2003.
The Anglo-Saxon cathedral and the majority of the monastic buildings at the site had been demolished following a fire in 1067. The new cathedral was constructed in 1070-1071 AD. Features relating to the demolition of buildings at the site include a series of cuts and deposits (truncating the Anglo-Saxon levels), alongside a charcoal lens which may also have been relating to the fire. Mortar floor bedding was also identified and was thought to potentially relate to the laying of the Norman floor or its later removal.

Later medieval wall footings and a chalk floor were identified within the trench. The possible presence of a N-S partition in the northern part of the trench washighlighted through a contrasting tread and floor surface to the NW and NE. A possible bench foundation also dated to the medieval period. The location of this feature suggests that the northernmost of the three existing cloister doorways in this area of the site was post-medieval in origin. A shallow N-S slot set within a mortared chalk and flint footing was thought to have originally supported a bench or other light structure.
Later features include a Tudor tile floor and floor bedding, alongside a step or outer cill associated with the post-medieval doorway. During the Commonwealth, a plaster-faced brick wall was constructed, which was followed by a series of alterations in the Georgian period, including alterations to the steps and doorway in this area of the site.
