Maritime record TQ 77 NW 1274 - 1667 wreck of Dutch fireship which was expended during the attack on the Hope

Summary

1667 wreck of Dutch fireship which was expended during the attack on the Hope, also known as the attack on Tilbury, the penultimate action of the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-7). This vessel was probably consumed somewhat to the east of the principal action, since the Dutch had come in from the eastward, the English defending their position to the west, and it was noted: 'In little time after another of their ships took fire and burnt down, but at such a distance as could not prejudice us.' The action at the Hope was notable for being fought entirely between fireships on both sides, led by Sir Edward Spragge on the English side and on the Dutch side by Aert Jansz. van Nes. The English expended the ALBEMARLE (1033768), CAMEL (1033769), STAR (1033770) and an unknown fireship (1584245). The Dutch expended 10 other fireships: 1584256, 1584257, 1584258, 1584260, 1584266, 1584268, 1584273, 1584274, 1584275, and 1584276. Accounts vary, but 11 Dutch vessels appear to be accounted for in the most comprehensive primary source.Constructed of wood, this expended fireship was a sailing vessel. Status: Casualty
