Summary
1667 wreck of Dutch fireship, one of two expended on the ROYAL JAMES, between Chatham and Upnor, during the Raid on the Medway during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The ROYAL JAMES may have been sunk on the Upnor side. For the other fireship, please see 1584554. Three other fireships were expended in the attacks on the ROYAL OAK and LOYAL LONDON nearby: the ROTTERDAM on the latter, along with a second fireship. Constructed of wood, she was a sailing vessel. One of the Dutch fireships expended in this action was sold as a wreck in 1669, but it is not known which of the five this was.
