Full Description

A neolithic Causewayed enclosure was partially revealed during excavations associated with construction of the Ramsgate Harbour Approach road in 1997/1998. This feature had previously been seen as a cropmark on aerial photographs, both to the west and to the east of the excavated area. (1-2)

The cropmark appears to relate to the outer arc of the causewayed enclosure. Combining excavation and aerial photographic evidence the arc consisted of 19 segments, of which six were exposed in the excavation area and 13 were visible as a cropmark. The cropmarks suggest an arc about 135m long extending some 34m west from the western limit of excavation. 11 segments (labelled A-J A being the southernmost) were located on the western side of excavation, their approximate dimensions are; A- 6.4m long by 2.4m wide, B-6.4m long by 1.6m wide, C- 4.0m long by 0.8m wide, D- 11.2m long by 1.6-2.4m wide, E- 10.4m long by 1.6-2m wide, F- 6.4m long by 2.4m wide, G-15.2m long by 2.4m wide, H- 14.4m long by 1.6-2.4m wide, I- 6.4m long by 1.6m wide and J-8.0m long by 2.4m wide. Two further segments were seen to the east (K and L). Segment K appeared to be around 6.4m long and 1m broad while segment L appeared to be 11.2m long and 0.8m broad. Though each segment appeared as a continuous ditch, it seems likely that they were formed in the same way as the excavated examples; through the excavation of multiple smaller pits. (3-4)
